Is it normal for my baby to wake every hour

If your baby is waking every hour overnight, you are probably exhausted and wondering whether this is something you simply need to wait out, or whether something is actually going on.

The short answer is: sometimes frequent night wakings are developmentally common, but persistent hourly wakes often have an underlying reason.

The good news is that when babies are waking every 1 to 2 hours overnight, there is usually something we can identify and improve.

Why Is My Baby Waking Every Hour?

When a baby is waking every hour overnight, there is often a contributing factor impacting their ability to consolidate sleep. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • The timing is off. They are undertired and don’t have enough sleep pressure to easily consolidate sleep, or they are overtired which can fragment sleep, lead to more vocal or upset wakes, and contribute to early rising where they struggle to return to sleep.

  • They are relying on help to sleep. If your baby consistently falls asleep while being rocked, fed, bounced, or otherwise heavily assisted, they may wake between sleep cycles looking for that same support to return to sleep.

  • They are going through the 4 month sleep regression. Around 3 to 5 months, your baby’s sleep cycles mature and begin to look more like adult sleep. This means they move into lighter sleep more frequently and can suddenly begin waking every hour despite previously sleeping longer stretches.

  • Reverse cycling. Some babies take in fewer calories during the day and begin shifting feeds overnight instead. This can lead to more frequent night wakings, particularly every 2 to 3 hours looking for feeds.

  • The environment is disrupting sleep. Light exposure, inconsistent noise, room temperature, or a sound machine that shuts off overnight can all contribute to frequent waking. We generally want a dark room, continuous white or brown noise at safe levels, and a comfortable sleep environment.

  • Schedule and daytime sleep issues. Too much daytime sleep, not enough awake time before bed, inconsistent naps, or missed wake windows can all impact overnight sleep quality.

How to Help Your Baby Sleep Longer Stretches

  • Refer to a wake window chart, as many babies do not reliably show sleepy cues, knowing their average wake window can put you on the right track for better nights and naps!

  • If your baby is always assisted fully to sleep, consider gradually giving them opportunities to fall asleep more independently and less drowsy. Babies who can fall asleep independently are often better able to connect sleep cycles overnight.

  • Prioritize daytime feeds. Aim for regular daytime feeds, ideally earlier in the wake window when your baby has more energy to feed effectively.

  • Look at the sleep environment and ensure it is dark, consistent and conducive to sleep.

  • Give changes enough time and consistency before switching strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for a newborn to wake every hour? Newborn sleep is naturally fragmented, but even newborns can often do some longer stretches. If your newborn is waking hourly consistently, feeding patterns, scheduling, or comfort may need to be assessed.

Can overtiredness cause hourly wakes? Yes. Overtired babies often have more fragmented sleep, more difficulty settling, and earlier morning wakes due to elevated cortisol levels.

Will my baby grow out of waking every hour? Some babies improve naturally over time, but persistent frequent night wakings often continue unless the underlying cause is addressed.

Why did my baby suddenly start waking every hour at 4 months? This commonly occurs during the 4 month sleep regression when sleep cycles mature and babies enter lighter stages of sleep more frequently.

When Will It Get Better? Waking every hour overnight may be common, but that does not always mean it is something you simply need to wait out.

The good news is that with the right timing, approach, and support, sleep can absolutely improve.
