Almost every discovery call has a moment. We get to the pricing conversation, I mention that our team includes Registered Social Workers and certified sleep consultants, and that extended health benefits may cover the cost, and the energy on the other end of the call shifts completely. "Wait, seriously?"

Yes, seriously.

When you're in the thick of sleep deprivation, running on fumes, Googling at 3am, wondering if this is just your life now, the last thing on your mind is calling your benefits provider. But before you write off sleep consulting as something you can't afford, here's what I want you to know: depending on who you work with, your extended health plan may cover some or all of the cost. And finding out takes about five minutes.

The short answer

Sleep consulting can be covered by extended health insurance in Canada but only if your sleep consultant holds a regulated health designation, such as Registered Social Worker (RSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW), or works alongside one as part of a coordinated program like More Than Sleep. If they do, your plan may reimburse the sessions the same way it would any other social work or mental health service. Coverage varies by plan, but many employer-sponsored benefits packages include RSW services through providers like Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield Canada, Blue Cross, Canada Life, and others.

Why your consultant’s credentials matter more than you think

Here's something most parents don't know: sleep consulting is an unregulated field in Canada. Anyone can call themselves a sleep consultant. There's no governing body, no required credential, no licensing process.

That doesn't mean all sleep consultants are the same. Ours have studied, passed certification exams, and been mentored through hands-on supervised experience. But it does mean the quality of support varies enormously depending on who you work with, and it also means that on its own, a sleep consulting credential isn't something most insurance plans recognize.

That's where the structure of our team makes a real difference. The majority of our consultants hold RSW or MSW designations, which are regulated health credentials governed by provincial colleges. And all of our sleep consultants, whether they hold that designation themselves or not, work within a coordinated care framework alongside an RSW. Insurance plans recognize those credentials, and the training behind them extends well beyond sleep into mental health, family systems, behaviour, and parent support.

So you're not just working with someone who knows about wake windows. You're working within a team that's trained to look at your whole picture.

How to find out if you’re covered

It usually takes one phone call or five minutes in your benefits portal. Here’s exactly what to do:

Log into your extended health benefits portal, or call the number on the back of your benefits card. Ask whether your plan covers any of the following:

  • Registered Social Worker (RSW) services

  • Social work services

  • Mental health practitioners (RSW)

Most plans don’t require a doctor’s referral for RSW services, so you won’t need to make a separate trip to your GP/Ped first. You just need to confirm the coverage exists and understand your annual limit.

A few things worth asking while you have them on the phone: Is there an annual maximum? Does the invoice need to be in my name, my child’s name, or both?

What the reimbursement process actually looks like

I think a lot of parents assume insurance reimbursement means a mountain of paperwork and a lot of back and forth. In my experience, it’s actually pretty straightforward.

Here's how it works when you work with our team at Have Baby. Must Sleep., whether your consultant holds an RSW designation or you're in our More Than Sleep program:

You book and complete your package as normal. At the end of our time together, we provide you with a detailed invoice that includes all session dates, the total amount, and your consultant’s RSW registration number and credentials. That’s everything your insurance provider needs. You submit it directly to your plan, and reimbursement typically comes through within a few weeks.

One thing to know: because RSW sessions can often be billed as family therapy, invoices can include both your name and your child’s name. To have your name on the invoice, you do need to be present and actively participating in the sessions — not just your baby. If that matters to you, it’s worth checking with your provider before you start about how they handle family therapy billing.

And if you don’t have extended health benefits at all? You can still work with our RSW consultants. It’s also worth knowing that RSW services may qualify as a medical expense for tax purposes — something worth asking your accountant about when you file.

What this looks like at Have Baby. Must Sleep.

We offer two insurance-eligible pathways depending on what your family needs.

The first is our Let’s Get Sleeping package, where you work with a certified sleep consultant who is also a Registered Social Worker. The full package cost is insurance-submittable, which means for many families, the out-of-pocket cost is close to zero. Your consultant brings both sleep expertise and a social work lens to your sessions — so if something bigger is going on beneath the surface of the sleep struggles, they’re trained to see it and support it.

The second is our More Than Sleep program — the only offering of its kind in Canada. You work with two dedicated professionals: a certified sleep consultant focused entirely on your child’s sleep, and a separate RSW actively supporting your perinatal mental health, your relationships, and your wellbeing as a new parent. They’re in ongoing communication throughout your package, coordinated and genuinely working as a team on your behalf. The RSW portion of this package is insurance-submittable, which covers the majority of the cost.

Both options include an age-appropriate intake questionnaire, prep materials before you start, a one-hour video consultation, a personalized sleep plan, virtual bedtime support until 30 to 40 minutes after your baby is asleep, six days a week of text support, check-in calls throughout, and a comprehensive wrap-up guide when you’re done.

If you want to dig into the details including the specific costs, what each package covers, and how to figure out which one is right for your family — I’ve put together a full insurance coverage page on the site with everything you need.

The bottom line

Sleep consulting isn’t always the luxury expense it looks like on the surface. If you have extended health benefits through your employer, there's a real chance that working with our team ends up being a smaller investment than you expected.

The key is knowing what to look for and who to work with. I hope this helps.

If you have questions about whether our services might be covered under your plan, book a free discovery call and we’ll figure it out together.
